Mentorship Program

The Rotary Club of St. Vincent celebrates Vocational Service Month in October of each year.  As one of our projects we are preparing to launch our Mentorship Program. A mentor  is someone who serves as a counselor or guide. The way the program works is that a group of students are paired with an expert in a particular field of study (the Mentor) in order for the students to learn about an area of mutual interest. The mentor’s role includes communicating expertise in the field, answering questions, or assisting with a particular project.

Mentoring enable students to:

  1. Set better goals, helping individuals discover what they really want, using their own values, needs and vision as a reference point.
  2. Reach their goals faster providing a consistent structure of support and offering innovative strategies to reach their goals.
  3. Make significant changes focusing on areas such as business, career and quality of life.
  4. Get ahead professionally using career advancement strategies, reputation-building methods and business development tactics.
  5. Make better decisions & have someone to collaborate with.

A mentor is someone who can guide the mentee, help them to find the right path and who can help to develop answers to their career issues. Mentoring provides the mentee with an opportunity to think about their career options and progress. A good mentor helps the mentee to believe in him/herself and increase their confidence. Mentoring allows the mentee to explore new ideas in confidence. It is a chance to look more closely at yourself, your issues, opportunities and what you want in life. Mentoring is about becoming more self aware, taking responsibility for your life and directing your life in the direction you decide, rather than leaving it to change.

Mentoring can produce a vast amount of benefits to a mentee including:

  • Self Development
  • Increase in Self Confidence
  • Access to advice for Career Guidance
  • Provide answers to Questions
  • Clarification of Problems
  • Gain in Independence
  • Shares Skills on becoming Proactive about Life

A good mentor will want to ensure that the mentee gains confidence and independence as a result of mentoring and is eventually able to go forward independently. The mentor can provide coaching on interpersonal and organizational skills. Mentors can also provide a sounding board against which to bounce new ideas, clarify problems and suggest alternative working methods.
